Eli's Fortune Folly |
Eli Jacobs tries to impress dazzling Lila Mendoza by getting rich, launching one wild money-making scheme after another—each ending in hilarious disaster. As his pet-sitting fiascos, recycling chaos, treasure mishaps, and exploding gumballs make him a local legend, Lila grows more annoyed than impressed. But when Eli turns his failures into a funny comic, everyone finally sees his true charm. Lila softens, realizing he’s much more likable when he’s himself. In the end, Eli discovers that honesty and humor—not fortune—are the real way to win a heart. |
Eli Jacobs never believed in love at first sight—until the day Lila Mendoza walked into class wearing a jacket that sparkled so bright he nearly went blind. Every time she moved, glitter exploded off her like she had her own special-effects team. Even her sneakers shimmered when she tied them.
Eli was doomed. She wasn’t just pretty—she was dazzling. When she smiled, the whole classroom looked like someone had turned on the “fancy” lights at a restaurant. From that day on, Eli was hooked. He tried everything to get noticed: answering every question in class (even the ones no one asked); holding doors for people who weren’t even going through them; and smiling so much his cheeks started cramping. Nothing worked.
Then one morning, Lila arrived with a brand-new phone—the kind with triple cameras, fingerprint unlock, and her initials engraved in gold. Everyone crowded around to see. “Daddy says it’s the newest model, and I love new expensive things” she announced proudly, snapping a selfie that probably got more likes than Eli had socks. Everyone oohed and aahed—except Eli, who was suddenly struck by a horrifying realization: Lila liked shiny things that cost a lot of money, and he was about as shiny as a sock that had been through the dryer too many times and had about as much money as a mouse searching for a bit of cheese.
At lunch, he slumped next to his best friend Max. “She doesn’t even know I exist,” Eli moaned. “If I had stuff like that or bought her some expensive gift, she’d totally notice me.” .......
