In Copycorn Estates, everything is the same—until ten-year-old Nora dares to ask “WHY?” Her colorful acts of rebellion spark curiosity in others, challenging the strict rules of sameness. Though the HOA resists, the community begins to embrace creativity and individuality. In the end, Copycorn transforms into a vibrant place of joy and wonder. |
Copycorn Estates was a very nice place to live, or so most of its residents believed. Conveniently located in the quiet suburbs of a large city, it was a refuge from the turmoil that city living often brought; no sirens blaring at night, no unexpected strangers on the sidewalk, no surprises at all, really. Every lawn was trimmed to precisely two inches, every mailbox painted the exact same shade of beige, and every home, a flawless replica of the next. The streets curved in perfect loops, designed more for harmony than adventure. Neighbors exchanged polite nods, wore nearly identical clothes, and held the same opinions about nearly everything from the proper height of hedges to the correct day to put out recycling. Yes, life in Copycorn Estates was peaceful, predictable, and very, very beige.
Like in a lot of other developments, life in the Estates was overseen by a Home Owners' Association (HOA), a group of five elected residents led by Mrs. Straightlace. But, unlike the HOA's of other developments, this one established rules for living in the community that went far beyond such things as regulating the way the houses looked. To ensure everyone lived in harmony, strict adherence to a set routine was demanded. Every day in Copycorn Estates was exactly the same and that made all the residents feel comfortable and satisfied that those around them shared the same kind of life.
And so it went, day after day. Week after week. No one questioned it. Everyone was quite satisfied, secure in the knowledge that life held no surprises. .
