Sammy The Hitchhiker |
Sammy is a very adventurous grasshopper who lives in Yellowstone National Park. He his chosen by his fellow grasshoppers to travel all the way to the Everglades to meet with other grasshoppers from all over the country. To make the journey, he hitchhikes on all different vehicles, makes human friends, and has many different adventures. |
Now you may not think that creatures other than us humans can lead an exciting life. But it may surprise you to know that many of them have interesting adventures. For instance, one creature in particular comes to mind, his name is SAMMY, and he is a grasshopper. There are many different types of grasshoppers, one can call these grasshopper tribes, and Sammy proudly boasts about being a Montane grasshopper, the kind of grasshopper that lives in one of our very famous national parks, Yellowstone. Every five years or so, the different grasshopper tribes from all over the country come together in a sort of convention to meet each other, share stories, and celebrate how wonderful it is to be a grasshopper, regardless of which tribe of grasshopper one may be.
These conventions are always held in a national park because they provide the kind of natural environment which grasshoppers love. It is important that the representatives of the all the different grasshopper tribes attend these gatherings both as a sign of respect to the tribe hosting the convention, and as a way of ensuring that each tribe is recognized as being part of the grasshopper family and stays connected to this extended community. Several years ago, the Montane tribe hosted the convention in Yellowstone. It was a great success, and it was agreed that the next convention, which was coming up this year, would be hosted in the Everglades national park by the Luber tribe.
Now, Yellowstone is in Montana which is in the northwestern part of the country, and Everglades is in Florida which is in the southeastern part of the country. This is a long way to travel, especially if you are a grasshopper. In fact, it is almost 3,000 miles away. But, despite the distance, it was important that the Montane tribe send a representative to this convention. The only way for a grasshopper to make a journey such as this was to hitchhike rides and to do this the grasshopper had to have certain skills........
